How long do bagpipe chanter reeds last?
Never owned a reed instrument before, but I'll be buying a practice chanter and wanted to know how long the reeds last if properly cared for.
Unfortunately there's no real firm answer. If you're talking about practice chanter reeds, they can last for quite a while. I have a MacCallum practice chanter with a MacCallum reed. Like the other responder said, the practice chanter has a plastic reed. The MacCallum reeds have two plastic blades surrounded by what is essentially heat shrink tubing. Mine's lasted three years so far with near daily use of at least 20 minutes each time. If you're at all interested in advice on what to buy, I would say don't make the mistake I did and buy one of those cheap Pakistani chanters. Unless you are really nervous about the investment (which isn't that much really if you get a decent polypenco chanter) go with the cheap one and then when you feel like you're committed, get the good chanter.
Bagpipe chanter reeds are a different story. There are two makers of synthetic chanter reeds that I've found so far, but the vast majority (and those used by every world class piper and pipe band) are cane. Being a natural product, it's lifespan depends on use. The key thing is moisture. The reed will absorb moisture from your breath as you play and there are some who will put the reed under hot tap water BRIEFLY to warm it up and make it easier to play when starting practice sessions or performances. The next thing is maintenance. Handle it carefully! Don't chip the corners and be sure to remove the chanter from the bag when you're done playing. If you don't, the reed will get moldy and it'll never work again. To finally get to your question, my bagpipe chanter reed has lasted about two years with use on the low side of moderate. I don't get to play as much as I would like so it's lasted a long time. My instructor who plays almost daily and plays with an active pipe band gets his reeds to last for close to a year with good maintenance.

Good luck with your own bagpipe journey!
